The Golden Rule

We get audited at work, a lot. This meant that every so often a group of strangers shows up at work and takes over 2 or 3 conference rooms. They are able to wander freely throughout the building and ask for any information that will help with their audit.

We also have a full cafeteria and staff onsite. They make breakfast (on request) and lunch everyday. They are also responsible for catering any big meeting we have at work. All meals are fairly priced and the staff is friendly. Everybody knows their names from the president to the electricians. This is the same with every person at work. Everyone (for the most part) is equal and is treated the same.

But when the auditors come in they don’t treat the kitchen staff like we do. They treat them like they are there to serve them. Their tone is very demanding. Their attitude towards everyone for that matter is the same. I’m not sure if it’s a power trip or they really think that the kitchen staff is below them.

People often toe the line of self confidence and cockiness. Being self confident is an internal characteristic. It has nothing to do with others. Cockiness however is en external characteristic. It’s how you perceive yourself compared to others. People with a false sense of self worth will more often than not think very highly of themselves…they’re cocky.

I’m not saying that you should not have a positive view of yourself. You should be proud of your accomplishments. But trying to make someone feel like they’re beneath you isn’t the way to do it. I guess what I’m trying to say is, there are a few people who you really don’t want to piss off…and the person that cooks your food is one of them.
